On-Line Dimension for Posets Excluding Two Long Incomparable Chains

چکیده
For a positive integer k, let k + k denote the poset consisting of two disjoint k-element chains, with all points of one chain incomparable with all points of the other. Bosek, Krawczyk and Szczypka showed that for each k ≥ 1, there exists a constant ck so that First Fit will use at most ckw 2 chains in partitioning a poset P of width at most w, provided the poset excludes k+k as a subposet. This result played a key role in the recent proof by Bosek and Krawczyk that O(w ) chains are sufficient to partition on-line a poset of width w into chains. This result was the first improvement in Kierstead’s exponential bound: (5 − 1)/4 in nearly 30 years. Subsequently, Joret and Milans improved the Bosek-Krawczyk-Szczypka bound for the performance of First Fit to 8(k − 1)w, which in turn yields the modest improvement to O(w ) for the general on-line chain partitioning result. In this paper, we show that this class of posets admits a notion of on-line dimension. Specifically, we show that when k and w are positive integers, there exists an integer t = t(k, w) and an on-line algorithm that will construct an on-line realizer of size t for any poset P having width at most w, provided that the poset excludes k+ k as a subposet.

The dimension of posets with planar cover graphs excluding two long incomparable chains
It has been known for more than 40 years that there are posets with planar cover graphs and arbitrarily large dimension. Recently, Streib and Trotter proved that such posets must have large height. In fact, all known constructions of such posets have two large disjoint chains with all points in one chain incomparable with all points in the other. Gutowski and Krawczyk conjectured that this feat...
متن کاملFirst-Fit is Linear on Posets Excluding Two Long Incomparable Chains
A poset is (r+s)-free if it does not contain two incomparable chains of size r and s, respectively. We prove that when r and s are at least 2, the First-Fit algorithm partitions every (r + s)-free poset P into at most 8(r− 1)(s− 1)w chains, where w is the width of P . This solves an open problem of Bosek, Krawczyk, and Szczypka (SIAM J. Discrete Math., 23(4):1992–1999, 2010).

Bosek and Krawczyk exhibited an on-line algorithm for partitioning an on-line poset of width w into w lgw chains. They also observed that the problem of on-line chain partitioning of general posets of width w could be reduced to First-Fit chain partitioning of (2w + 1)-ladder-free posets of width w, where an m-ladder is the transitive closure of the union of two incomparable chains x1 6 . . . 6...
متن کاملAn Improved Bound for First-Fit on Posets Without Two Long Incomparable Chains
It is known that the First-Fit algorithm for partitioning a poset P into chains uses relatively few chains when P does not have two incomparable chains each of size k. In particular, if P has width w then Bosek, Krawczyk, and Szczypka (SIAM J. Discrete Math., 23(4):1992–1999, 2010) proved an upper bound of ckw on the number of chains used by First-Fit for some constant c, while Joret and Milans...
متن کاملLinear Discrepancy of Chain Products and Posets with Bounded Degree
The linear discrepancy of a poset P , denoted ld(P ), is the minimum, over all linear extensions L, of the maximum distance in L between two elements incomparable in P . With r denoting the maximum vertex degree in the incomparability graph of P , we prove that ld(P ) ≤ ⌊(3r − 1)/2⌋ when P has width 2. Tanenbaum, Trenk, and Fishburn asked whether this upper bound holds for all posets. We give a...
